How to Overcome Driving Anxiety: Tips from a Gold Award-Winning Instructor

As the 2024 Northeast Driving Instructor of the Year, I’ve worked with hundreds of learners who’ve described themselves as "nervecited" – a mix of nervousness and excitement – or who feel genuine anxiety about getting behind the wheel. Anxiety can feel like a barrier to your driving dreams, but with the right approach, you can learn to manage it and build confidence on the road.
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings – They’re Normal
Driving is a complex skill, and feeling anxious about it isn’t a sign of weakness – it means you’re taking the responsibility seriously. I always start by letting my students know that it’s okay to feel wobbly sometimes; we’ll never push faster than they’re comfortable with.
2. Start Small to Build Momentum
For complete beginners, we don’t jump straight onto busy roads. We begin in quiet car parks or residential streets, focusing on basic skills like starting, stopping, and steering. Each small success builds confidence and shows you that you can handle what feels daunting at first.
3. Communicate Openly With Your Instructor
One of the top fears I hear is "what if my instructor shouts or gets frustrated?" A good instructor will always adapt to your needs – that’s why I make sure my students know they can speak up at any time if something feels too much. We’ll adjust our pace or revisit skills until you feel secure.
4. Practice Relaxation Techniques Before and During Driving
Simple methods can help calm your mind and body:
• Take slow, deep breaths before you start the engine (in for 4 counts, out for 6)
• Focus on the task at hand rather than worrying about what might happen
• If you feel overwhelmed, pull over safely and take a moment to reset
5. Use Visualisation to Prepare
Spend a few minutes before each lesson imagining yourself driving calmly and confidently. Picture yourself handling different situations smoothly – this mental practice can help your brain feel more familiar with what you’ll be doing behind the wheel.
